About our cause
My name is Michael Cato and I am Chairman of the 'The John Pounds Trust'. I would like to give you a brief history of the Trust and what we do.
John Pounds was born in 1766 and at the age of 14 while working in the Portsmouth Dockyard had an accident which changed his life. He became known as the crippled cobbler and in his spare time educated and fed poor children in his workshop in Old Portsmouth up until the day of his death on New Year's Day 1839. The Elementary Education Act of 1870 whereby all children received state education was the outcome of those who kept John Pounds work alive through the Ragged School Movement.
Today the Trust approaches schools in the Portsmouth area to locate children who have faced or are facing difficulties because of accident or illness or perhaps challenges in their home life. The Trust provides funding towards educational needs such as books and materials, tuition, examination or travelling expenses.
This year sees the 250th anniversary of the birth of John Pounds and we hope to raise £25,000 to increase the financial security of the trust for the future.
Thank you for your help in supporting the work of 'The John Pounds Trust' and good luck!
Yours Sincerely,
Michael J Cato, Chairman, John Pounds Trust
