About Us:

Charles Dickens Community Orchards are building on the established Cornwallis Crescent Community Orchard established in March 2016, which provides a much needed green oasis space in the centre of the city for people to enjoy with their families for picnics.  These are future legacy projects for our children and grandchildren. A place where free fruit is grown for local people, with meadow areas.  A place where people can volunteer to help water the trees in the hot weather and grow fruit bushes and flowers to help the bees come and pollenate the trees. We have a masterplan now and are looking for your views some visit our face book pages and let us know what you think.

We aim to have some beautiful meadow flowers strips again this year as they have proved very popular and buying the seeds costs money so we would like to have some help with this and new fruiting plants to go into the raised beds. New steel benches have been fixed and are an investment in our site.

The Charles Dickens Community Orchards and Cornwallis Crescent Community Orchard are works in progress and the vision of Dennis David and Jon Stokes from the Tree council. We will continue planting more trees around the city now as we managed to obtain funding from grants we have alot of different types of fruit bearing trees growing. So we aim to have a foraging resource in the future.

We are kept going through the help of voluntary donations and several grants so far and would like to provide so much more in the future through working with the local community garden and are supported by Portsmouth city council and the Portsmouth & Southsea Tree Wardens and Tree Council. Encouraging local people to work together. All the trees help to reduce the air polluntion in the city and make it a nicer place to live in.

Our hopes for the future are to provide a free local resource for residents.  This would include free training, providing horticultural knowledge and a local history and literature project linked to Charles Dickens and his love of apples for young people. We aim to get the younger members of the community involved.  We will be working with the local schools, community groups and are hoping to work with Portsmouth University too.  We aim to bring the local community together more to look after these lovely community assets. See our facebook pages Cornwallis Crescent Community Orchard Volunteers and the Charles Dickens Community Orchards for more information and updates on what is going on.

We need your help so we can continue to improve what free resources we have in the city.

Thank you for your support and good luck!

Yours Sincerely

Dennis David lead volunteer and supporting officer Trish Bell
